"Road's Gettin' Muddy" is James' long awaited acoustic blues guitar recording with his strong vocals backed by a killer rhythm section. Recorded live in the studio to analog tape by recording whiz Ron Rogers with most of the same musicians from his acclaimed "Sugar Moon" CD. While primarily acoustic there are some surprise electric tracks such as "TV Mama" that has electric slide with an Elmore James vibe and the original instrumental "Shadow Orbit" that is homage to 1960's surf music. Mary Flower adds some nice harmony vocals in a more acoustic style on the Carter Family tune "My Dixie Darling" while playing some tasty dobro and there is the Lonnie Johnson blues tune "You Had Too Much" where Mary and James do an old fashioned blues duet. While "Sugar Moon" has a vintage swing feel "Road's Gettin' Muddy" has a grittier, more bluesy feel with a wide variety of material from delta slide, blues tinged bluegrass to the above mentioned electric tracks.
